Tutoring and afterschool enrichment programs both take your child's time and your money — but they serve completely different functions. Confusing them leads to spending on the wrong solution, frustration when results don't materialize, and kids who feel like they're being "fixed" when they need to be challenged.

When tutoring is the right answer
Tutoring makes sense when:
- Your child has a specific skill gap (fractions, reading fluency, grammar) that's blocking their progress
- A grade or test score needs to improve within a defined timeframe
- Your child has a learning difference that requires specialized instructional approaches
- School pace is moving faster than your child can process and solidify concepts
The key signal: is there something specific your child doesn't understand that they need to understand? That's tutoring territory.
When enrichment programs are the right answer
Afterschool enrichment programs make sense when:
- Your child is keeping up in school but you want to build skills beyond what school offers
- Your child has an interest they want to pursue more deeply
- Social development, physical activity, or creative expression is the real goal
- You want to build intrinsic motivation and love of learning — not just academic performance
The hybrid situation: when both might be needed
Many families need both — but the mistake is running them simultaneously without coordination. If a child is in tutoring for math and robotics club, and the robotics club uses math skills the child hasn't mastered yet, the club becomes frustrating instead of motivating. Sequence matters.
A general rule: address the foundational gap first through tutoring, then expand into enrichment once the child has the confidence to enjoy it.
Questions to ask before signing anything
- What specific outcome are we working toward, and how will we measure it?
- How often will you update me on progress?
- What does a typical session actually look like?
- What's your policy if progress isn't happening?
Any provider who can't answer these clearly shouldn't get your child's time.
